Projects
GBK is involved in a number of projects in collaboration with organisations from around Australia.
This year, the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF) and Gur a Baradharaw Kod (GBK) entered into a partnership.
This will allow researchers unique opportunities to understand the ways in which Zenadth Kes people know their environmental history and to be able to harness this knowledge in future environment management planning for the region.
A co-design process is at the heart of this partnership, allowing Zenadth Kes people to express what environmental concerns they consider to be critical. CIEHF will then use this information, and combine it with their research expertise to investigate these concerns on their behalf.
The CIEHF partnership provides a platform for Traditional Owners to lead research grounded in cultural authority and lived experience.
CIEHF partnership
In March, CIEHF members travelled to Masig for an on-Country workshop with GBK.
This workshop identified research priorities for Zenadth Kes communities, especially as it relates to the lived impacts of climate change on Land and Sea Country.
It allowed Traditional Owners - as leaders, researchers, and teachers - to shape the national conversation on climate, knowledge-sharing, and land and sea management.
We look forward to deepening this partnership as we work together to document and protect cultural and environmental knowledge for future generations.
March 2025
GBK and the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to solidify their collaboration for the benefit of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people across the Torres and Endeavour Straits.
TSRA is the lead Commonwealth agency in the Torres Strait for Indigenous Affairs, supporting programs including health, governance, infrastructure, environmental management, and cultural art and heritage across the Torres region.
This agreement strengthens the working relationship between the two organisations, providing a framework for continued cooperation on initiatives that serve the cultural, social, and economic aspirations of communities in both regions.
The MOU marks a key step forward in driving positive outcomes for the people of the Torres and Endeavour Straits. This collaboration promises to promote a prosperous and sustainable future for the region, fostering greater opportunities for its people.
