Our work crews
This year, MGNM established work crews on more islands, as well as the first all-women’s work crew on Thursday Island.
Community work crews are designed to support local employment on the islands, while also providing support to the community at large. Each work crew consists of a work supervisor, and at least three local job seekers, and they work on projects that will benefit the community as a whole. Before a community work crew is put together, consultations are held with Elders and the community to decide on these projects.
Here are some examples of what our work crews have been doing across the Torres Strait region.
Eastern islands
Mer (Murray Island)
The Mer Island MGNM work crew worked with the TSIRC Engineering Team to restore the Welcome Arch, also known as the Shark Teeth Project. Members of the work crew and the engineering team participated in a week-long welding training run by RTO Civil Safety from Cairns, and all participants successfully passed the training.
With the knowledge gained from this training still fresh, both teams quickly commenced work on the Shark Teeth Project, completing the restoration in just one month. This successful collaboration has beautifully restored the Shark Teeth, which holds significant cultural importance for the Mer Island community.
Erub
Across the year, the work crew on Erub worked to support cultural events. They were were joined mid-year by members of AACAP (Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program).
They also developed skills in the MGNM work shed, including building work benches that means the shed will be able to install more tools such as a bench drill, drop saw, bench grinder, vices, and more.
Central islands
In partnership with AACAP, the Poruma work crew initiated the demolition of outdated shower and toilet facilities, as well as the kiosk and grandstand at the community stadium.
They will soon begin building new and improved facilities for the stadium.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the revitalisation efforts within the area and aims to enhance the facilities available to the community.
Poruma (Coconut Island)
The Yam Island Work Crew are working on a Gazebo Restoration Project—a vision that has been in the hearts of locals since the crew’s formation.
Under the steady guidance of Community Works Supervisor Richard Billy, visiting CDP Project Officer Bryce Harry, and Mareko Nai, a qualified carpenter and local jobseeker who volunteered his time and skills to support the project.
The crew has begun assembling new seating and backing for the gazebos, ensuring each structure is safe, stable, and welcoming for community use.
This project not only enhances public spaces but also showcases the strength of community collaboration and the value of local skills and leadership.
Iama (Yam Island)
The Warraber work crew have built an outdoor fireplace for everyone in the community to emjoy.
By repurposing 44-gallon drums and leftover AACAP timbers, they have created a warm and inviting space for gatherings.
Additionally, they are crafting special coffee tables designed specifically for Elders, ensuring they have a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy their time together.
Warraber
The Masig work crew, under the direction of Supervisor Mr. Mabo, has executed substantial enhancements at the entrance of the GBK/MGNM Office. Key accomplishments include the establishment of a flower garden and the installation of the newly designed GBK signage.
These improvements have garnered positive feedback from community stakeholders, notably a light-hearted comment from a local Elder who remarked, "To good boys and girls, I think today is Meriba Ged's birthday!"
The team has dedicated significant effort to prepare for the sign installation, which necessitated the removal of the old fence, and the erection of new fencing.

They also actively participated on the day of the ceremony, offering their support where needed.
